About Jiema Yangzong Glacier

Jiema Yangzong Glacier(杰马央宗冰川)is in the area of Zhongba County(仲巴县), Shigatse Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region which is originated in the northern foothills of Mount Himalayas and is the source of Yarlung Zangbo River(雅鲁藏布江). According to the study, 116 square kilometers of Jiema Yangzong Glacier are covered by glaciers and permanent snow. The terrain of the glacier which is surrounded by steep mountains and cold valleys is really high with an altitude of 5,590 meters. Locals call the sparkling glacier “Jiema Yangzong Glacier,” and the river that combines glacial melt water is called “Jiema Yangzongqu”(杰马央宗曲). Jiema Yangzong Glacier which is originated from Yarlung Zangbo River is now listed as the national ecological functions protection area.

The Scale of Jiema Yangzong Glacier

The distribution of Jiema Yangzong Glacier Groups(杰马央宗冰川群)is more than 100 kilometers long, which includes Jiema Yangzong Glacier with the origination of Yarlung Zangbo River and the origination of Kubi Zangbo(库比藏布). There are 32 glaciers with the snow line of 5400 meters high. Among them, there are 18 glaciers in the source area of Jiema Yangzong(杰马央宗源区), covering an area of 85.59 square kilometers. There are 14 glaciers in the Kubi reservoir area, covering 119.71 square kilometers. Jiema Yangzong Glacier is the largest glacier in the source area of Jiema Yangzong, which is 11 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide, with an altitude of 5,070 meters.

The Scenery of Jiema Yangzong Glacier

Jiema Yangzong Glacier shows visitors different colors in different seasons. Sometimes it is magnificent with the spectacular snow mountains and the imposing and beautiful glaciers. Sometimes it is elegant with the natural pastures and the lush green mountains. The glacier stream runs down with the sounds of the snow water, the glacier and the rolling stones like the thunder. It is called “Yangqia Zangbu”(央恰藏布)in ancient Tibetan language, meaning the holy water flowing from the highest peak. The river flows from Nnamjagbarwa Mountain(南迦巴瓦峰) to the south, and then to the border of Baxika(巴昔卡).

Tourist can travel to Lhasa by air or train firstly and then transfer to Zhongba by long-distance bus, which is the major choice.
