About Shannan martyrs cemetery
Shannan martyrs cemetery was founded in 1956, it was moved to Zedang(泽当镇) town in 1965, officially opened in March 1966. The cemetery covered an area of 55000 square meters, it is the largest, the most complete revolutionary martyrs memorial building in Tibet.

The cemetery is composed of the martyrs’ deeds area, the scenic area, the monument square and the tomb area. There are four major characters written by Zhude(朱德委员长) “martyr’s cemetery(烈士陵园)” on the main gate of the cemetery. The memorial hall is named by Deng xiaoping(邓小平总书记), the museum of martyrs(烈士纪念馆).

Monument square covers an area of 2164 square meters. The monument is 16 meters high, inscribed originally as “defending the frontier, Tibet construction martyrs are immortal(捍卫边疆,建设西藏的烈士永垂不朽)” , after getting repaired, it was changed to “The revolutionary martyrs are immortal(革命烈士永垂不朽)”. In the cemetery, there were a total of 689 revolutionary martyrs who have been laid to rest in Tibet for the peaceful liberation, the construction of Tibet, and the fight against India’s self-defence.
