Shanghai-Lhasa Trains

Travel between Shanghai and Lhasa by train is available for tourists, the distance between them is about 4147 km. Shanghai is located in the Yangtze River Delta, at the junction of the Yangtze River and the Huangpu River. It’s one of the four municipalities in China. You could view the Huangpu River on the Bund, visit the renowned Shanghai Museum, shopping at one of the world’s busiest shopping street Nanjing Road. As the commercial and financial center of China, Shanghai has a large-scale integrated transportation network include air, road, waterway and railway.  Lhasa is located in the center of the Tibet Autonomous Region , with an elevation of 3,656 meters, while only  ‎4 meters in Shanghai, please be prepared to prevent altitude sickness. Traveling from Shanghai to Lhasa is an incredible journey that traverses eight provinces across China, before climbing up to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Z164 (return Z166), as one of the early three railway links with Tibet, connects Shanghai with Lhasa. The railway line covers 8 provinces from east to west China and has 4373 km in total. It normally takes about 47. 34 hours to reach Lhasa from Shanghai. As the train travels amid mountainous range, conductors of each compartment of the train will use Chinese, Tibetan Language and English to introduce renowned scenic spots along the railway line as well as Tibetan customs and making of Tibetan dishes, etc.

Please Note:

  • Booking an original train is easier than booking a passing-by train. You can book a train ticket 10 days in advance at most.
  • Generally, the seats on the train in China have two types including soft seat and hard seat. Also, there are two kinds of sleeper seats on China’s trains which are hard berth and soft berth. Hard berth is divided into upper berth, middle berth and lower hard sleeper (lower berth is the best); while soft berth is divided into upper berth and lower berth (lower berth is better).
  • In China, taking a train is a comparative cheaper way to cut down the travel cost. While correspondingly, the comfortable level is lower than by air.
  • For luggages, passengers need to take them by themselves and keep an eye on them during transporting without luggage-checking service on the train.
  • Do not bring too many luggages during the peak seasons if necessary.
